Alaskans: Please send in a letter of support for SB 161/ HB 203. Senators Mike Cronk (R-Interior Alaska) and Robert Yundt (R-Wasilla) introduced Senate Bill 161: Prohibit Bottom Trawling. Representatives Kevin McCabe (R- Big Lake) and Neal Foster (D- Nome) introduced a companion bill in the State House of Representatives.
A person may not use, employ, or operate any trawl or dredge fishing gear that makes substantial bottom contact with the seafloor while in use, as determined by the department, in the water of the state. Full text: SB 161 and HB 203
**SalmonState has some concerns about specifics in the bill and has offered solutions that can be achieved as the bill moves through the legislative process. We want to see the legislation written in a way that would allow for the continued operation of small boat side stripe shrimp and scallop harvesters in the State of Alaska.
