About
We work to keep Alaska a place wild salmon and the people who depend on them thrive.
SalmonState is a charitable initiative begun, sustained, and powered by Alaskans. From start to finish, our wild salmon advocacy is Alaskan: created, driven, and powered by us.
We employ a frequently used nonprofit model, fiscal sponsorship, to provide back-office and administrative services like human resources, accounting, and compliance support. SalmonState is fiscally sponsored by the New Venture Fund (NVF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. In this model, SalmonState fundraises for its own programs, with our donors making tax-deductible donations dedicated to funding our programming. A portion of SalmonState’s budget is allocated to pay for NVF’s back-office services, which enables SalmonState staff to focus on the work that drives us without the cost and expense of also running an independent organization.
We employ this model because it means that all of us at SalmonState can stay focused on keeping wild salmon around in Alaska while avoiding getting bogged down in the administrative tasks. It’s the most efficient, effective, cost-conscious way of getting things done, which is why it is a model that has been around for decades and is used by thousands of organizations across the country. If at some point NVF is no longer an efficient and effective fiscal sponsor for SalmonState, we can move to a different fiscal sponsor or create our own nonprofit organization.
