Rachel and her son, Gus

Rachel James, Public Lands and Waters Lead

Rachel James, born and raised in Palmer, Alaska, has worked with rural Alaskans from Barrow to Yakutat and in the field of environmental policy at the local, state, federal, and international levels.

After spending nearly a decade in Patagonia eating farmed salmon, she has returned home to focus on protecting wild Alaskan salmon habitat so her six-year-old son can enjoy a lifetime of eating healthy, wild fish.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Talking to animals.

What’s your favorite wild Alaskan food?

Dall Sheep meat. These amazing white animals live off lichen in the alpine tundra. Their tender meat is flavorful and energizing. To hunt and eat a Dall Sheep is a very unique Alaskan experience!
