Greg Harris

I’m a fairly conservative individual. I typically vote Republican. I’m pro-development and I’m for the responsible use of our God-given resources. But this mine, in this location, could be catastrophic on so many levels.

Anywhere else, this mine might be doable. Right here, there’s just too much at stake. Bristol Bay will produce jobs in perpetuity, as long as we take care of it. Pebble Mine will produce only a certain amount of time, and then we’ll be left with a toxic mess.

I’m for mining and timber and development, but the fish is also a resource. And the thing about the fish — it’s not a finite resource. It’s an infinite resource if we take care of it.

I’m optimistic. As a conservative, you used to think, ‘Oh, you’re just an environmentalist. Some crazy tree hugger.’ But Bristol Bay is a renewable resource in a very special part of the world that up until now has continued to produce jobs and beautiful salmon. I hate to think what’s going to happen if that’s wiped out.”
